Lucy, a fifteen-foot cayman, goes past like a nuclear sub. They say it's safe to take a dip, but tell that to the dog that Lucy dragged from the riverbank and downed in one gulp. The time of day, told by the height of the sun, is ten or eleven o'clock. I don't eat breakfast as a rule, but wander down to the makeshift jetty with a hard-boiled egg left over from last night's meal, and strong coffee in a tin cup. They say all the sacred rivers in this neck of the woods begin with an X, and this is the Xishuau. It runs south to the Jauaperi, which empties into the Rio Negro, which decants into the Amazon, which steers a course for the ambushed city of Manaus – but that's a three-day sail with a good crew in a good boat, and still a thousand miles from the coast. Might as well make the most of this once-in-a-lifetime trip while it lasts. Besides, you'd onlybe trundling into tow, Huddersfield town, to the Blue Rooms Café for a round of toast, or sat in the buffet car between Wakefield Westgate and King's Cross, or looking bemused at a sheet of paper or computer screen, staring into space.
